But why shouldn't I just keep my old photos in albums?
Why do the pages in our albums yellow, and our photos change colour and fade?
There is a substance in paper called “Lignin” which, when exposed to air and sunlight over a period of time, turns it yellow. As the lignin absorbs more oxygen it gives off a darker colur.
Think of an old book. You will probably find that the edges of the pages have yellowed while the middle of the pages are still white. Because only the edges of the pages are being exposed to the air, they are the only part of the book affected.
Exactly the same thing happens to a photo album. Even if it has been stored in a cupboard it still gets a certain exposure to air and therefore the process occurs. Unfortunately it is inevitable and it’s extent is very unpredictable.
Why do the photos discolour?
This is to do with the difference between “pigments” and “dyes”. The Mona Lisa has not faded over time because she was painted with pigments, whereas a 30 year old photo fades because dyes are used. Dyes are the image forming elements on a colour photograph. There are three dyes that are used: cyan, magenta and yellow, and they are separated into different layers. Together they form all possible colours in a photographic image. Over time, with the exposure to both atmospheric conditions and chemical reactions the molecules in the three dyes break down, at different rates, into colourless substances, which is why your photo fades and ends up like this. Cyan tends to be the first to break down, leaving a distinct orange tint to the photo.
